'Mā te Rā' - A free, printable handlettered karakia
One of our motivations at AHO is to design and create taonga that affirm, celebrate and strengthen our unique culture and identity in Aotearoa. This reclamation and affirmation of our inheritance and our desire to better understand our whakapapa, culture, worldview and matauranga as we interact and shape our world today takes on many forms.
One of these is the pursuit of Te Reo- a window to Te Ao Māori (the Māori world/worldview).
One of the many challenges and joys of being a student of Te Reo is we're always hearing and discovering new phrases, whakataukī, karakia and whakaaro that we'd like to add to our kete.
In practice this looks like notes stuck all around our whare. Kupu drawn with whiteboard markers onto the window above the kitchen sink where we hope they'll sink into our unconsious by sheer repeat exposure, and an ongoing rotation of karakia and whakatauki drawn and painted and hung from frames, in an effort to be a little more aesthetically pleasing.
These hand lettered pieces are made for the joy of the process, of creating. Because dwelling on the kupu as they're written helps them sink in, and so that we'll see them and use them everyday.
We're making them and using them in amidst our whānau life, so now you can too.z
