A small visual offering for you and your whānau this Matariki.
Within the Aho whānau, we, like many many whānau across Aotearoa are on a journey of learning, growing and shaping our Matariki traditions and mātauranga.
With a focus on coming together, sharing kai and resting in our home, these illustrations were created to help us learn the names of each whetū, to learn the realms they connect to, and to create a feeling of anticipation, festivity, focus and intention in the weeks leading into and through Matariki.
Each design and colour scheme relates to the knowledge we have acquired around each star- and as visual learners, it has helped the names to ‘stick’ for us. For example, the hues of Tupuārangi- the whetū associated with the bounty of the forests and lands- are drawn from the ripe berries of the miro, and the feathers of the kererū. Tupuānuku depicts the kūmara and roots.
We’re just at the beginning of this journey, so would encourage to you seek out your own sources of mātauranga to complement our whetū.
We request that you do not use these for commercial purposes, but, please do feel free to share them far and wide within your whānau, learning communities and beyond.
We’d love to see how you use them, so please do tag us on Facebook (AhoCreativeNz) or Instagram (@ahocreative)
