Matariki Whetū (Star), Wall Decals

As we, as a country and a whānau, grow our knowledge of Matariki and create new traditions and rhythms around this season, we set out to create some visual cues to set the tone and intent and anticipation within our home.

These whetū (stars) are watercolour illustrations that were created alongside our tamariki as we set about learning about each of the stars in the Matariki constellation. They depict the colours and associations that each star has- for example Tupuārangi is associated with food that comes from the sky- like berries, fruit and birds. The illustration for this whetū echos the colours of the ripe miro berries as well as the feathers of the Kererū. 

We've created an option to add the name in written form to each star by layering a small sticker on top which merges seamlessly into the design. Once you've learnt them or no longer require the names, simply peel it off and re-adhere to the backing paper.

These wall decals can be applied to any clean dry surface (walls or glass). The are fully removable, so once the season is over, you can simply peel them off the wall, reapply them to the original backing paper and store them in the shipping tube until this time next year.

We will also include a short description of the stars and their associations, but as we are mere fledglings on this journey, we encourage you to seek out your own mātauranga to deepen your knowledge. Our intention is to share the visual cues we created for our whānau- but we're no experts in Matariki customs.

Designed inhouse and made in Ōtautahi, Christchurch, these wall decals are a high quality, fully removable, re-stickable, block-out  fabric wall sticker.

This set includes the 9 stars of the Matariki constellation and 6 smaller unnamed stars to extend the skyscape with. Each of the 9 stars in the Matariki constellation have a small name overlay that can be added the the star if you choose. Each of the main stars are between 12-16cm in diameter.

Wall decals are a great way to decorate your whare. They are easy to apply- just peel and stick. When you're ready for a change, they are just as effortless to remove and rearrange. When you've finished with them, just peel them off the wall and put them onto the backing sheet. They can be removed and reused countless times.
