Ngā mata o te marama- Ceramic moon phases: Midnight Navy on Toast

As our curiosity about, and knowledge of, the maramataka (Māori lunar calendar) has deepened, so too have our observations of the natural world — of seasons of growth and rest, of sowing, tending, waiting, and harvesting. We notice the ebb and flow of Hinemoana (the ocean), as well as the tides within ourselves. As wahine, we observe the rhythms of our tinana month by month, learning how best to ride rather than resist these currents.

We created these Mata o te Marama — ceramic moon phases — as a physical touchstone and a visual reminder of our place within the taiao. They speak to our cosmic connections and the way we, too, are woven into the ebb and flow of Hina's choreography.

Each set of mata is strung on linen thread and handmade in our Taranaki studio from clay, then glazed. A set includes five phases of the marama, and when hung measures approximately 78 cm in length. The full marama has a diameter of approximately 11 cm. This listing is for Midnight Navy on Toast Brown Clay.

Please note: each set is unique due to its handmade nature. Every piece has been checked for structural integrity. Some may show small surface cracks on the reverse, but these do not affect their strength or beauty. We ask that you handle them with care — if struck together or dropped onto hard surfaces such as tiles or concrete, they will break.
