The colour Kokowai derives its name and inspiration from our whenua. Kokowai , also known as red ochre or iron oxide is a taonga, derived from the earth that has been used throughout time to add pigment (colour) to customary creative practices and performances. It is a rich, deep burnt sienna shade.
The design, Rauru, was inspired by the energy of new life and unfolding potential. 'Rauru' is quite literally the maternal end of the umbilical cord- the flow of life. It is the embrace of two elements in whakairo; a double spiral. The twining of multiple threads in raranga.
