These beautiful Poi are executed to perfection by the talented 15 yr old Siena Ataahua Terimene-Simon (Waikato). Having been involved with kapa haka her whole life, Siena learned how to use poi from her late Nana as a toddler.
In 2018 Siena began her own venture Te Poi, creating poi to share with the world with a dream of promoting engagement in Kapa Haka, particularly poi, for those who would like to learn. Siena has now taught her Mum how to assist with production and her Dad supports with the graphic design work. A whānau enterprise that resonated deeply with our Aho kaupapa and vision.
Featuring our Aho fabrics and crafted from exclusively natural and sustainable materials, these poi are made from gorgeous NZ wool and our cotton-flax linen fabrics. These poi come in two sizes, the smaller suitable for tamariki and the larger for older tamariki and adults.
The small size has a 16cm long braided handle.
The large size has a 24cm long braided handle.
They are incredibly durable for real use (having been tested thoroughly by a baby, and two enthusiastic tamariki).
They have a paper layer between the wool-filling and the fabric outer which provides the requisite sound for performance- however this does mean that they cannot be washed.
They also make a beautiful taonga - whether you have poi talents or not. A lovely tactile, textural treasure for your home, hung on your wall, on your coffee table or for curious, hautūtū manuhiri.
