This taonga is an Aho Whānau collaboration. Originally conceived by my parents for their moko, our tamāhine, as a space to play, learn, enact and normalise Te Ao Māori within our home.
My Māmā, Janette, a lifelong educator and innovator came up with the concept, and as always, roped in my Pāpā, Don, who in his spare time is a master woodworker and problem solver, and my brother Reuben has provided the carving innovations with his cnc-ing skills.
This product is 100% New Zealand made.
Made with aroha and attention to detail, we hope they'll become a taonga tuku iho, an heirloom piece that can be loved and played with for generations to come.
This waka is designed with holes where the whānau members can be matched to their appropriate sized-hole- this is a great activity in matching, fine motor skills and coordination for tamariki. The waka has been designed to rock when on a smooth hard surface to add to it's charm and complexity for the user.
These waka complement out Wharenui+Whanau set beautifully.
